Short answer: Tiao recommends children start pipa from age 6 or above. By then most kids can sit still for a lesson, have enough finger strength and can follow instructions. Not sure if your child is ready? Book a HK$200 trial lesson (pipa loan included) and let the teacher take a look.
Every child develops differently, so 6 is a guideline, not a rule. The teacher can assess readiness during the trial.

Pipas come in different sizes, and smaller children may suit a smaller instrument. Try a lesson before buying, then read our Pipa Buying Guide. The trial includes a loaned pipa, so there's no need to buy upfront.

Not necessarily. Exams can give a clear goal, but enjoyment matters most. Tiao's teachers help students prepare for graded exams — for example the Central Conservatory of Music exam run by the HKEAA, which includes pipa. Talk to the teacher about whether it suits your child. For fees and rules, see the official HKEAA page.
Group classes are HK$1,080 for 4 lessons and aim for one complete tune in 4 lessons — learning with peers keeps kids motivated. 1-to-1 lessons let the teacher tailor everything to your child's pace. Details on the Pipa Lessons page.
